Chinese Whispers
25 November 06 - 08:21

Here's how it works. I (a living, breathing, thinking feeling human) communicate with my computer (a machine). My computer (a machine) talks to your computer (a machine). Your computer (a machine) talks to you (a living, breathing, thinking feeling human). There is nothing wrong with using tools, even monkeys do and besides the howling and throwing of their own feces they seem on the whole to be fairly well balenced. But something is lost in the exchange, lets call it the "soul" of comunication.

New Zealand has 20 sheep per person, that's good, but they have just passed a troubling national law, which is bad (notice the aformentioned "troubling". Nation wide educational legislature has now opened its metaphorical arms and embrassed the language of the future, i.e. cellphone talk. It is now perfectly acceptable to write an essay in any subject using entirely abrreviations comonly found in mobile email exchanges for example: "C U L8 R" (it's the only one I know).

Is New Zealand a crazy country? No more than the next, and I expect the trend to continue. We will give equal opportunity to the language of phones and computers. We will say, "yeah sure, the way you talk to a small conglomerate of plastic and micro-chips is just as important as the way you communicate to another human". Soon it will take precidence and standard english will be frowned upon. It will be understood as "Newspeak" but typed as only "NUSPK" always in caps and from the confines of your appointed "interacting console" (really they're just small boxes all humans will be forced to live in avoiding all real interaction with the outside world).

Remember to fight even in the face of inevitability!

just another day in nyc
17 November 06 - 16:39

the internet at our sublet hasn't been working for about a week now. after multiple phone calls and attempts to figure out what the deal is, we have a "technician" appointment set for (hopefully) monday.

but that's not the point. the point is, given that we don't have internet at home, i was forced to go to the cafe with free wi-fi. they have yummy coffee, and they even give you a free chocolate morsel with each cup purchased. this cafe is just north of soho, which is the "nice" shopping area. it also happens to be close to our apartment (about a 10 minute walk).

anyway, so i'm sitting in the cafe, right next to (and facing) a large window that looks out onto the sidewalk. most people that walk by at least glance in the window, probably because all of us "window-sitters" are about 2 feet from the window and its quite bright in here. so why not look in? the point is, hugh jackman just walked by with one child on foot and another in a stroller. and yes, he did look in. we made eye contact... i smiled... he smiled... and then i stared at the back of his head as he walked away. i'd like to think that we had a "moment," but i'm sure my "moment" was just one of dozens of "moments" that he has on any given day. still, its rad to tell you about it... i'm not ashamed to admit that i'm a sucker for star-sightings (although i like to think that i'm not the gawking-type).

side note: i just read that hugh jackman has the same birthday as neal. except hugh was born about 13 years earlier.

in other news:
1.we have aquired a sublet that will last us through our time here in december. its about 1 block from where i work, so that will be pretty sweet for me.
2. jason is scheduled to land in nyc in about 11 minutes, with megan shortly behind him.
3. i just talked to rachel (neal's sister), and they have just found out that their baby is a girl!
4. if you watch "the office" on nbc, you will be happy to know that the real-life "jim" and i share the same birthday. he's two years older than me.

classic hilarity
15 November 06 - 10:27

the other day we decided to go get some dinner at the reliable moonstruck cafe. its pretty much an average diner - greasy decor with greasy (aka yummy) eats. anyway, we were in pretty good spirits. but what put us in even higher spirits was when we saw this:

stuck to the shoe

just as we were seated, a woman sitting at the table next to us returned from the bathroom with a long train of toilet paper stuck to her shoe. luckily i had my trusty camera phone, with which i could document the incident and share with you all today.

ps. i highly recommend the french toast!

one more for the road.
12 November 06 - 09:03

remember that saying about a bunch of monkey's typing on a bunch of typewriters and then something about shakespeare? well, the internet is, as im sure you've heard, a lot like a giant collection of typewriters and we are the all-too-willing monkey's! regardless, the link that follows is, i think, something akin to shakespeare. its also neato that sharing something like this is as easy as it is thanks to the aforementioned collection of typewriters.

watch me!!!

also, at some point i had intended to tie in something about creativity and distribution... but... i lost my focus and consequently the point... so just imagine the sort of things i would have said about those two subjects. ciao!

finally, mad props to myself for 6 posts in a row!

Quote
09 November 06 - 14:21

the following quote was given to me today. it has had some impact on me, and consequently, i would like to share it.

"Nothing in the world can take the place of Persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan 'Press On' has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race."

-Calvin Coolidge

in related news: im sick today and sick and tired of it!

those of you who know me know that i am all about the p-o-l-i-t-i-c-s. i mean, seriously, i am very very p-o-l-i-t-i-c-a-l. because of my innate advantage in these matters (read:handsomeness and storied political career) i feel compelled, if not obligated, to post the following link.

political link

the contents of the link may shock and awe, or perhaps they will just make you madder than a rattlesnake in a bowl of jello. regardless, don't think of reading the contents of this link as an option. instead, think of it as your civic duty. so... do it already! stop reading this drivel and click the stinking link! im serious! *bleck*
