brought to you by the letter D

Jason brought me a dead cicada the other day wrapped in a paper towel, sort of like how in hunt and gather societies a male might bring a prospective mate a dead dear, I was excited put it on my desk and planned to have a photo shoot a little later. Five or so hours passed and I returned to the desk but dead cicada was gone, hmm where did dead cicada go? It didn't fall off the paper towel and it wasn't anywhere on the desk. I was certain that thing was dead so I began to ponder how else it may have disappeared. I thought back to the time when ants carried a dead cockroach away in my hostel in C. Rica and I thought it was possible that something similar happened only this time the house centipedes were more likely to be the culprit as I do not have an ant problem (well I take that back there have been a few rather large carpenter ants popping up lately but those are few and far between). After a long search I decided to stay at Jason's house last night for fear if the cicada was alive and not "dead cicada" after all ,that it might decide to start its high pitch scream at 2am or if it was in fact "dead cicada" then I didn't really feel comfortable in my home anymore knowing that there was an unidentified "tenant" in my apartment. After work I came home and the cicada was found on the floor on the other side of the room from my desk, it was not moving so I picked it up and decided to get my pictures of it before releasing it into the wild. I used a copy of my resume to scoop it up and carry it into the kitchen for some natural lighting, (I like how it looks like the cicada is applying for a job and at the tip of his wings you can see the word "pesticide" because I use to apply these nasty things at the greenhouses but as you can see I normally live in harmony with my crusty bug friends, sigh, it was just sort of moving for me maybe you had to be there or maybe the heat really is getting to my brain) anyway, there was no movement from dead cicada at all so I continued to work through the shoot taking various posses with cicada and resume, cicada from the front with big letter "D" for dukovcic and finally dead cicada under a glass, well dead cicada was very compliant up until this last pose, as soon as i put that glass over it, it suddenly came to life, kid you not, dead cicada no more! it scared the crap out of me, these things are dieing right now so they are everywhere and their metabolisms must be really slow so it must have mustered up enough energy to sort of roll over onto its side and give me the middle leg. I guess I deserved it.
