what's the best way to put this? i have a new obsession. hmm... maybe a better way to put it is this: i have a new interest. i realize that most of you won't find this new interest to be very... interesting. but i just can't keep it in. i love cardigans! yep, cardigans are my latest interest. kind of petty, huh?

TB and Me, Number 15
14 January 08 - 18:08

Hello.  As some of you may know I started my first week of nursing school last week.  It was a very hectic start given that I was accepted into the program 5 days before it started and I flew back to Ohio one day before my very first class.  All seemed to be going pretty smooth until I got tested for TB....tuberculosis that is.  I had a pretty strong reaction to the skin test which is a sure sign that you have TB.  Now before anyone gets freaked out thinking that I am contagious, let me just say....I am not.  Next I got to witness first hand how stupid our healthcare system actually is. The story goes a little something like this:

nurse: "Wow! that looks like a positive reaction for TB if I ever saw one!"

me: "okay, so what does that mean?"

nurse: "Well, do you have health insurance?"

me: "No, I was hoping to get that through the school, can I get that through the school?"

nurse: "No, we don't offer that"

me: "But I just read the hospital's mission statement, i believe it said something like "to serve the poor and underrepresented"!"

nurse: "Go downtown and there is a free TB clinic that will see you"

I leave the hospital that is my new school to visit a free TB clinic in downtown Columbus!

enter TB clinic

Take a number, I am number 15, sit down next to three people that are wearing masks, think to myself "should I be wearing a mask too?!! If i didn't have TB already I certainly do now!!"

TB nurse: "NUMBER 15"

I follow TB nurse to the back

TB nurse asks series of questions, and determines that I have latent TB, which basically means that I was exposed to someone that had active TB and they coughed, laughed or sang in my general direction and the bacteria flew into my eyes, nose or mouth. Since I am in excellent health my immune system could handle it and kept the bacteria in check, but the bacteria is still in me, sort of like sleeping in me waiting for my immune system to be compromised and then it could attack.  She assured me "This is not your fault" and "There is no explanation for why a healthy young person such as yourself tests positive and someone like me who has worked with TB for 25 years has never tested positive".  nurse then takes a chest X ray, draws blood and tells me to come back in a week to get meds.   In nine months I should be TB free but for the rest of my life it is advised that I get a chest X ray every year just to be safe.  Fun fun. and again I repeat I am not contagious :)

wildlife sighting
14 January 08 - 14:26

The other day I was heading out to work in the wee hours of the morning, and right as I stepped outside I was confronted by a red-tailed hawk just 4 feet from my door. I had inadvertently disturbed the hawk ripping the heart out of a freshly killed dove. I locked my door and proceeded to slowly walk around the hawk as it rotated around its prey ready to peck my eyeballs out, or something. It was very eery, and I felt like at any moment the hawk was going to speak to me, like that movie with the talking lion. We eventually parted ways, and I headed off to the psych ward to see my patients for the day.

nyc
08 January 08 - 21:22

i found this video via swissmiss, a blog i read on occasion.

what resonated with me (besides the nyc imagery) was the line, "new york was HIS town, it always would be." one of the fantastic things about nyc is that despite its dense population, tall buildings, and "cold" persona... when you live there for awhile somehow it really does become "your" city. you find a neighborhood that you love and it becomes "yours". you go to the same coffee/bagel cart every morning and it becomes "yours". you walk and use public transportation because its a way of life, not because you "don't have a car". and it just feels so right. one definitely gets to know the city in a far more intimate way than through a windshield. i miss these things!

rainy
05 January 08 - 13:56

it rained all of yesterday. i thought, "this is the perfect type of day for a native oregonian to take a 3-mile walk." so that's what i did. i geared up in my cowboy rain boots, wool coat, and pink umbrella.

hot boots

the cowboy rain boots proved to be the bane of my existence for the day. first of all, cowboy rain boots do not make good walking shoes (as one might imagine). but hey, i wanted dry feet. second of all, i have a little syndrome that i like to call "podiaclaustrophobia." yep, my feet have an "abnormal fear of being in closed or narrow spaces". its not that i can't wear shoes... its just that at some point during the day, my feet start freaking out (in only the way that feet can) and i absolutely MUST free my toes. so... these cowboy rain boots are one size smaller than i normally wear. sliding them on is no problem, but after walking three miles my feet were sweaty and probably a bit swollen, thereby creating a boot removal problem. and when a podiaclaustrophobic must get her shoes off... she MUST GET HER SHOES OFF NOW. with a lot of pulling, twisting, begging, and with the aid of flour (to try and soak up some of the moisture), the left boot came off (whew). on to the right boot...... and its stuck. i mean, my foot doesn't budge at all. i try adding more flour. no luck. i pull harder. no luck. i consider cutting off the boot (yes, i was desperate). instead, i took a deep breath, laid down, and made myself relax. after 15 minutes of concentrated effort to let my right foot relax, as much as it didn't want to, i pulled the boot off with success! oh... the relief! thinking about that experience makes my toes cringe in trepidation. those boots have got to go.

but hey, my feet were dry! (from the rain, at least)

lastly, my LA-rain-inspired artwork can be found here.... check it out!
